About The Name
Ahwenehaode (ahh-when-en-hout-dant). Is a Cayuga term meaning “Using kind supportive words.” The name was given by a member of the Cayuga nation in consultation with elders and the IJP Advisory Circle.
About The Logo
The eagle represents the Indigenous Justice Program, providing support to people who make up part of the wings and feathers. The eagle faces the future while the people on the wings form a path, holding hands in support of each other standing tall and firm as feathers.
About The Indigenous Justice Program
Ahwenehaode Indigenous Justice Program was founded in December 2016. Ahwenehaode is a new initiative created to:
- Improve access to justice for First Nation, Metis and Inuit people by collaborating with Indigenous social agencies and networks to build relationships and trust
- Provide culturally respectful and appropriate clinic law services and an accessible means of support, intervention and assistance.
- Foster and improve coordination and integration with other legal aid services and across all elements of the justice sector
